Tompkins Learning Partners, Inc.

(formerly Literacy Volunteers of Tompkins County)

[ About Us ]

Who We Are

Since 1976, Tompkins Learning Partners has been providing tutoring services, free of charge, to local residents who need help reading, writing, or speaking English. These services are provided through the many dedicated volunteer tutors who give their time to make a difference in student's lives. The knowledge that students gain allows them to function better in our community, obtain or improve their employment, or to continue their education by going on to attend college.

Each year 100 to 135 students and similar number of tutors work together under our auspices to make student's educational goals happen. In 2009, 76 volunteer tutors donated 4,112 hours of their time to their students. It is easy to see that the strength of Tompkins Learning Partners is the volunteers. A dedicated staff provides support to both the students and the volunteer tutors to ensure that both of these groups get the help they need to succeed.

Funds to provide these services are from grants given by Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca, the New York State Education Department, United Way of Tompkins County, and local foundations. Individual donations, donations from organizations, and special fundraising events also help us to keep our door open.

Tompkins Learning Partners is a not-for-profit governed by a board of directors of local residents committed to the cause of literacy in our community.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help adults and young people who live or work in Tompkins County meet their personal goals, free of charge, by improving their ability to read, write, and speak English, and to use math and computers.

Accreditation

ProLiteracy America accredited Tompkins Learning Partners in early 2003 and then re-accredited every four years. ProLiteracy America is the only national accreditation granter in the adult education and literacy field. This accreditation is designed to ensure high standards of program provision and to raise the credibility, and increase the visibility of literacy organizations in their communities.

Students achieve these goals by working together with professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors.
